Production at The Texas Theatre
Behind the Screens: Faces of Exhibition
Featuring Barak Epstein - Operator
Our production team arrived on location at 2:00 PM, a much later call time than we’re used to. Typically, these shoots happen earlier in the day before a cinema’s first showtime so we have a nice, quiet place to conduct our interview. But our b-roll shoot will extend much later in the evening for this particular event The crew immediately begins setup in the space we scouted the evening prior; lights go up, audio is set, cameras are placed, interviewee is ready, the scene is lit.
Sound and camera speed. Slate the take. Interview begins.
Barak gave one of the best interviews we’ve ever done. His brain is an overstuffed encyclopedia of cinematic history, both inside and outside of the Texas Theater, and you can feel that passion when he speaks. We double-downed with an additional flawless interview from legendary movie critic Joe Bob Briggs and it was such an honor. I grew up watching MonsterVision on TNT, so getting to feature Job Bob in this series made it one the most memorable to date.
The most challenging part of telling this story was post-production. Editing two interviews that lasted almost two hours in total, where every sentence has importance, is tough to condense down into 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Despite the difficulty of leaving solid gold soundbites on the cutting room floor, I’m very pleased with how this story turned out.
